Illegal burning sparks Kilgore fire

GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV)- Illegal burning sparked a brush fire that torched 10 acres in Gregg county. The fire started around 3:30 this afternoon off I-20, near highway 42 in Kilgore, close to a Denny's restaurant. Crews from Kilgore and Sabine rushed to contain the fire, and bulldozers were called in to cut fire breaks. Investigators say a homeowner burning trash started the fire, and it came very close to some nearby oil well fixtures.

"The winds been kicking up its also shifted directions from time to time so that plays a part in them putting down the lines and making sure they have it contained like they think they will they're working real hard right now to make sure it doesn't get into any oil wells on this lease," says Gregg county fire marshal David Kidder.

The fire was contained in about an hour and a half, and the homeowner was ticketed for violating the burn ban.
