Former Gilmer fire chief sentenced to probation

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- A former east Texas fire chief has been sentenced for misapplying a volunteer fire department's funds.

Mike Melton, 53, pleaded guilty, Friday, to charges that he misappropriated money from the fire department. Melton agreed to serve 10 years probation, and pay nearly $16,000 in restitution.

Melton was indicted back in December on charges of "misappropriation of fiduciary property," ranging from $1,500 to $20,000. He resigned as Gilmer fire chief in October.

The indictments date back to January 2008 and included abuse of checks and credit cards that belonged to the department.
