Caldwell Zoo elephant passes away

Released by Hayes Caldwell with the Caldwell Zoo:

Caldwell Zoo is saddened to announce that our African Elephant bull "Chico" passed away suddenly Saturday July 9.

At the time of his death he was 46 years old and the oldest African bull in North American zoos. Chico had not exhibited any signs of illness prior to his death.

A team of pathologists from Texas A&M University along with Caldwell Zoo veterinarians performed a necropsy and at this time the cause of death is undetermined pending further test results.

Chico arrived at Caldwell Zoo in 2003 from the San Diego Zoo to join our group of three female elephants. He was a very majestic elephant and will be missed by staff and visitors alike.

It's believed that Chico was the largest elephant in North America weighing in at more than 14,000 pounds.

Donations in Chico's memory may be made to the International Elephant Foundation at
