East Texas city one step closer to alcohol

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV) - A little over a week ago, the Henderson 1st Committee submitted a petition to Rusk County filled with signatures from residents who want alcohol sales on the November Ballot.

The signatures have been verified by Rusk County and now the petition must be voted on by the Commissioners Court.

If approved, two propositions will appear on November's ballot. The first would allow beer and wine to be sold in grocery and convenience stores.  The second would permit mixed beverages in restaurants.

Henderson 1st member Mike Smith says the city has been missing out on taxes from alcohol sales-money that could help improve Henderson's services.

Henderson resident Laura Little feels the sell of alcohol in the city is an economic issue-not a social one.

"They need to look past certain ideas that have been instilled for so long and look at the bigger picture. Which, is the City of Henderson," said Little.
