A group of exceptional students walk the stage for the first time

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Graduating from school is a tremendous honor. But nine East Texas students have the rare distinction of being the very first to graduate from their school, The Wayne D. Boshears center for exceptional programs.

Joy Wallach and her fellow graduates have a lot to applaud.

They're the first students at the Wayne D. Boshears Center for Exceptional Programs to ever have a graduation ceremony.

"Today means my daughter achieved everything she possibly could.  She's really matured here," says Joy's father, Perry Wallach.

So much so, joy could fully participate in her graduation.

"When she started school, so many years ago, she couldn't walk, couldn't talk, she wasn't toilet trained. We didn't' know how far she would go and her teachers here have really helped her be a really independent person," Wallach expressed.

"The things that are easy for us and tiny are big steps for them and it takes a lot of commitment, perseverance and advocating for your child to make that happen," explained Boshears Principal Karyn Hacker.

So, graduation day is as much for the parents as it is for the students.

We at KLTV also want to extend our congratulations to these students and their families, and wish them all the best in the future.

Good luck.
