Thieves stealing checks from Gregg Co. mailboxes

Released by the Gregg County Sheriff's Office:

GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Gregg County Crime Stoppers needs your information on recent thefts from mail boxes in the Lake Cherokee area where suspects are taking outgoing mail from mail boxes with the red flag raised.

Suspects are taking mail that appears to contain personal checks payable to different business's in order to pay bills.

Around May 25th, 2011, a tan or light brown SUV occupied by two white males, was seen taking mail from one mail box. The victim later realized this was not the normal mail carrier and it was Memorial Day so the mail carrier was not working.

The victim later checked with their bank, found that their check had been stolen, altered and cashed at a Wal-Mart store in Tyler, TX for over $480.00. The check had originally been written for $1.73.

Investigators checked with security at Wal-Mart in Tyler and were able to determine that the altered check was cashed by white male and further investigation revealed the suspects were seen getting out of a light color Jeep Grand Cherokee.

If you have any information on this case, you are encouraged to contact Gregg County Crime Stoppers at 903-236-STOP (7867) or online at greggcountycrimestoppers.com or contact Investigator Shelton at 903-236-8408. We do not need your name, only your information.
