UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Talking about his re-election campaign may mean to more legal trouble for an East Texas sheriff.
Upshur County Sheriff Anthony Betterton is awaiting trial for a count of official oppression.
Betterton and two other county officials are accused of conspiring to remove a man from a commissioner's meeting. The man had previously protested the court's decision banning public comments.
A gag order was issued in the case back in December.
In a recent newspaper article, Betterton is quoted as saying, "It is with deep regret that I have to file for re-election while under indictment for a politically motivated charge."
Court documents argue that the statement violates the gag order and could impair the court from finding an impartial jury for Betterton's case.
A hearing date for this complaint has not been set.
