New District Judge Named

A familiar face is taking over judge duties in the 241st District Court. Smith County District Attorney Jack Skeen was appointed to the post today by Governor Rick Perry. Skeen feels his more than 20 years experience in Smith County courts has him ready for the challenge.

"I've been involved in many trials in all three of these district courts," said Skeen, "Before, many different district judges and I've had the opportunity to learn from each one of them as a trial lawyer and as a prosecutor, and I'll be able to take those experiences on to the bench with me as judge of the 241st."

Skeen will serve until next year's general election when he can opt to run to finish off the existing term, which expires in 2006. He is expected to be sworn in around two weeks from now. State law says first assistant Matt Bingham will assume the duties of District Attorney until Governor Perry can appoint a successor. It has been confirmed, Bingham, and former Assistant District Attorney Alicia Cashell, both plan to apply for the appointment.
