After more than a decade in Longview, athletic director Pat Collins has decided to retire. The retirement was effective Thursday, although Collins will act as a consultant for Longview I.S.D. when needed. Collins arrived in Longview in 2000 and coached the Lobos football team until 2004.
With Collins leaving, head football coach John King takes over as athletic director. He will remain football coach. King says Collins had been comtemplating retirment for the last few years. Still, the decision came as a bit of a surprise.
"We've had some conversations in the spring about the possibility of this taking place," said King. "I wasn't sure. Yesterday (Wednesday) caught me off guard."
King says his new role as athletic director will not affect his coaching.
"People know me as a guy who wears a straw hat but I'll be wearing more than a straw hat, I'll be wearing two hats," he said. "It is an additional challenge to me but it's something I welcome."
