A 5-year-old autistic child was killed in a fire at a home in Hawkins. The home is located on County Road 3430, two miles West of downtown. The child and his mother were sleeping Sunday afternoon when a wood burning furnace caught fire. The pair were awakened by the smoke and tried to get out of the house. The mother says while trying to carry the boy out he became panicked and hid from her. Once the fire was out, authorities found the boy apparently dead from smoke inhalation. Wood County will continue it's investigation Monday. An autopsy has been ordered on the child.
