Former Catholic Priest Gets Life Sentence

Former Tyler Catholic Priest Gustavo Dejesus Cuello was sentenced Thursday to life in prison.
Cuello pleaded guilty earlier this month to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old alter girl over a six to eight month period beginning in 1995. Judge Cynthia Kent handed down a 50 year sentence which Cuello rejected. Today, a jury sentenced Cuello to life in prison and fined him $5,000. Cuello was originally arrested in 1997, but after posting bond, fled the country. He was tracked down in Ecuador and transported back to the U.S. to stand trial. Cuello was brought to Tyler in 1995 by the Diocese to minister to the Hispanic community.
