Released by Lufkin Police Department:
Lufkin Police Department is investigating an apparent attempted car-jacking incident that ended with the death of the suspect and a victim being treated at an area hospital for gunshot wounds.
At approximately 1:15 AM on Saturday, June 18, 2011, Lufkin Police Department (LPD) received a report of a disturbance that had just occurred outside of an Applebee's restaurant, located at 4609 South Medford Drive in Lufkin. The caller stated to LPD Dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend, Jackie Doyle Clay Jr. (White / Male / 12-29-1976, Lufkin), threatened her and discharged a firearm into the air. The caller stated that she fled the area by vehicle and did not know the location of Mr. Clay.
While LPD Patrol officers were responding to the area to search for Mr. Clay, LPD Dispatchers received a call requesting emergency medical assistance for a gunshot-wound victim at a Whataburger restaurant, located at 421 North Timberland Drive in Lufkin.
The responding officers soon learned that the Applebee's and Whataburger incidents were connected. Although the investigation into both incidents continues, officers believe that Jackie Clay Jr. walked from Applebee's to the intersection of South First Street and South Medford Drive in Lufkin where he attempted to take control of a vehicle driven by Kerry Barnes (Black / Male / 37 / San Augustine). When Mr. Barnes resisted by driving away, Mr. Clay discharged a shotgun at least once through the window of the vehicle, striking Mr. Barnes' shoulder, chest, and face. Mr. Barnes drove to Whataburger, contacted LPD, and was transported by Lufkin Fire Department personnel to Memorial Health System of East Texas, located at 1201 West Frank Avenue in Lufkin.
Responding LPD officers attempted to contact Jackie Clay Jr. through his mobile telephone and learned that he was still in the area of South First Street and South Medford Drive. LPD broadcast over the police radio descriptions of Mr. Clay and law enforcement personnel from LPD, Angelina County Sheriff's Department, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS), and a TxDPS helicopter, searched the area. The officers determined that Mr. Clay was somewhere within a large wooded area bordered by South First Street, Harmony Hill Drive, and Tulane Drive.
At approximately 4:15 AM on-scene officers heard a single gunshot emanating from the wooded area, near the intersection of South First Street and Harmony Hill Drive, and then found the body of Jackie Doyle Clay Jr. in that wooded area, dead from a single, apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.
The investigation into this incident continues; LPD detectives are interviewing witnesses and an autopsy of the body of Mr. Clay will be performed.
The current medical condition of victim Kerry Barnes was not known at the time of this release. Lufkin Police Department will release additional information when available, but not earlier than Monday, June 20, 2011.
