Makin' Bacon: "Does It Work?"

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Do you love bacon, but want to spare yourself some of the fat? There's not separating the fat from the bacon completely, but one of those "As Seen On TV" products claims to do it better than anything. It's called "Makin' Bacon".

It's right on the box, "Cook bacon better, above the fat, not in it." Makin' Bacon was invented by a little girl named Abbey. She came up with the idea when she was eight years old. She and her dad went to work and developed the actual product. She says her mom loves it because it's easier, and her dad believes it makes eating bacon healthier.

The Makin' Bacon device is made of microwave/dishwasher safe plastic. Just stick the three hangers in the holes and you are done. Then, drape the bacon over the t-bars. The Makin' Bacon is designed to hang and cook up to 18 pieces.

We put it in the microwave for five minutes and as it cooked you could see the grease dripping away, vertically from the bacon. All the while the bacon was hanging above the grease and getting shorter and shorter. We removed the Makin' Bacon with the patented "cool-grip handle" (it was cool) and we unloaded our bacon onto a plate covered with three paper towels. In the Makin Bacon's drip pan there was lots of grease left. Our bacon never got the chance to swim in all that.

We cooked the rest of the bacon on a plate in the microwave. By the way, we could only fit seven pieces on there. When it was done, we realized the benefits of the Makin' Bacon's "cool-grip handle". The plate was very hot. We pulled the bacon out of the grease-filled plate bottom and loaded it onto a plate covered with three paper towels.

Everyone who tried the bacon felt like the bacon cooked with the Makin' Bacon was considerably less greasy. When it was gone, the amount of grease left on those paper towels was significantly less on the Makin' Bacon side. Looks like Abbey's Dad was right. The Makin' Bacon gadget cooks bacon with less grease.

Does It Work? We give it a "yes". The Makin' Bacon costs $6.99.
