LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin-based trooper arrested a Houston man Monday afternoon after he reported finding a pound of crack cocaine in a can of Tang after an exhaustive search of his vehicle.

Trooper Heath White said he conducted a traffic stop with Deunta Ketrell Rochelle, 20, at 12:30 p.m. on U.S. 59 South, near the intersection of FM 1819. White said Rochelle was in a 1999 Lincoln Towncar and following another vehicle too closely.

White said when he began talking to Rochelle, he began to give a lot of criminal indicators, including nervous behavior and having a criminal history, which he lied about.

White said Rochelle gave consent to search the vehicle. White said he ran across a 12-inch can of Tang but threw it aside and searched the rest of the vehicle.

"I knew he had something so I picked the can up again and saw that it had been cut open," White said. "I stuck a knife in it and hit bottom after just a few inches, so I knew something was wrong."

White said Rochelle had hidden over a pound of crack cocaine and 12 grams of powdered cocaine in the Tang can.

"What they did was pour the Tang out of the can, put the drugs in a smaller container, put that container back in the Tang can and poured the Tang on top of it," White said.

White arrested Rochelle on a first-degree felony of possession of a controlled substance.
