Why sweat when you can freeze?

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - For years, doctors and trainers have said the best way to get rid of that spare tire around your waist, is to hit the gym.

However, one East Texas doctor says why sweat it out when you can freeze it off.

It's called 'Cool Sculpting,' a new one hour procedure where your fat cells are frozen, helping minimize those problem areas like love handles, belly bulges and back fat.

But who qualifies for the procedure?

"The best cool sculpting candidate are people with fat that with exercise resistant bulges as we like to call it that are either at their ideal weight with a stubborn spot or within 10 to 15 pounds of their goal weight sometimes even 20 pounds," said Brittany McCaughan, performs procedures on clients.

McCaughan says during the procedure, you'll feel a tugging sensation the first five minutes, almost like someone's pinching you. That's where the cool part sets in. After those five minutes the area goes numb and you have an hour to relax, read or watch a movie.

"So they developed a technique by which they can apply a device to an area of fat, apply this for an hour and actually freeze a certain percentage of fat," said Dr. Mack Stewart, Pure Radiance Medical Director.

Dr. Stewart says freezing 20 to 25 percent of the fat is very safe. Doctors say after the freeze, your body absorbs the dead fat cells and disposes of them through the liver.

"And its then gone forever it's not simply decreasing the fat cells sizes for them to come back its actually going to kill the fat  cells and once they're removed and dead that's just like taking it out with liposuction," said Dr. Stewart.

They also say there is no harm to surrounding skin and tissue.

The FDA approved the Cool Sculpting procedure last year, and doctors say there is no recovery time.

If you're interested, the procedures cost about 700 dollars for each area.
