Car fire sets half-acre of woods on fire

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man and his 2-year-old son were heading home when he noticed smoke inside of his vehicle. He pulled over and escaped the car moments before it went up in flames, sparking a large grass fire off of Hwy 271 N.

He says he pulled over onto the shoulder of the road and noticed flames shooting out from underneath his dashboard. He and his son got out of the vehicle as a man was passing by in a van.

He pulled onto the other shoulder of the road and let them in just as their car went up in flames.

The car had a full tank of gas, which caused a large fire which in turn burned about half of an acre of the area next to the car.

The man immediately called 911. This is still under investigation, and we will have more details as they are available.
