Democrats File Challenge to Redistricting in Tyler Court

The next step in the Texas redistricting battle could be fought in East Texas. Texas Democrats are asking a Federal Court in Tyler to stop the new redistricting plan.

The motion has four main points. First, the Democrats say the State must get permission from the court before they redraw the map the court approved in 2001. Second, the State must prove there is a public benefit for changing the map. Third, Democrats believe the proposed map is unconstituional. And fourth, they say there just isn't enough time before the 2004 elections.

The complaint was filed in the Tyler Federal Court because that was the court which drew and approved the redistricting plan in 2001.
