Residents Happy After Plans for Halfway House Scrapped

There was an outcry over a proposed halfway house in one Tyler neighborhood. Now, it looks like those plans have been called off.

The facility on North Glenwood would have housed drug and alcohol abuse programs, and people eligible for release and parole.  Now the old Tyler Community Hospital building is proposed to be only a medical treatment center for those with physical and mental disabilities. Councilman Derrick Choice welcomes the change.

"[Citizens] wanted to have their voice heard. So, yes, I'm excited about this and it does speak volumes that community participation does work."

Choice passed out fliers urging people to come to a public hearing scheduled for Thursday night. After the company changed it's plans on a halfway house, and said they would not attend, the hearing was cancelled.
