Former Texas Governor dies in Dallas

Family members say former Texas Governor Bill Clements died Sunday at a Dallas area hospital. He was 94 years old.

Clements was first elected governor in 1979, becoming the first Republican since Reconstruction to take the office. He served as governor until 1983, when he lost his re-election bid to Mark White. However, four years later, Clements ran for governor again and won, serving until 1991.

Shortly after the announcement of Clements' death, Senator John Cornyn released a statement saying ""From his humble beginnings in the Texas' oil fields to his time as the first Republican Governor since Reconstruction of our State, Bill Clements' was a true Texas conservative icon and legend."
