Help for Thelma

Posted: Updated:

BEN WHEELER, TX (KLTV) - The only person injured when a tornado ripped through parts of East Texas last month is now talking about that life changing evening.

She was inside her home when the tornado tore her home to pieces.

Today, Thelma was back at work at her sewing business in Canton.

Thelma says she listened to KLTV's Chief Meteorologist moments before the storm hit. When he told her to get in a safe spot, she rushed to her bathroom.

Moments later, a tornado toppled over her home, and sent Thelma flying with the storm.

She says strangers sat with her under the rain until paramedics could get to the devastation.

She spent three weeks in the hospital recovering from a broken ankle.

In some strange way, Thelma says her passion for sewing and quilting saved her.

Nearly everything in her home was destroyed. she says some things can never be replaced.

Although Thelma will tell you she doesn't need much, there are two things, an eye examination and new bifocals so she can do what she loves---sewing.

A fund has been set up to help Thelma rebuild her life.

Donations can be made at any American National Bank branch. Checks should be made out directly to Thelma barker.

Donations can also be mailed to"
