LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -Two women booked into jail on Wednesday on counterfeiting charges reported to officers that their equipment to help them make fake money was stolen while they were incarcerated, according to Lufkin Police.

Lufkin Police arrested Melinda Dunn, 35, of Cordova, Tenn., and Ladona Jo Stewart, 25, of Huntington on Wednesday after they allegedly tried to pass fake 10-dollar bills at a Lufkin convenience store. They booked out of the jail Thursday on $2,500 bonds.

When they returned to their apartment, located on the 1800 block of East Denman Avenue, they reported to police that they had returned from jail to find that their roommates stole items from their residence, including a backpack, boots, clothing, perfume, jewelry and "counterfeiting equipment," according to the report.

The women then contacted the officer later Thursday and reported that a friend had recovered a box containing some of the stolen property.

The officer inspected the contents of the box and found an envelope containing counterfeit money.

The theft incident is still under investigation. The officer collected the counterfeit bills as evidence into the ongoing investigation into Dunn's and Stewart's prior arrest.
