City builds new home for family in need

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An elderly East Texas couple was living in a home so run down, the city of Tyler stepped up and built them a brand new home.

Thomas and Shirley Campbell lived in a home that barely kept a roof over their head. For years, the Campbell's endured winters without adequate heating.

"We just stayed in it. Tried to stay warm the best we could and after all we did, the Lord just made a way for us," says Thomas Campbell.

They applied for repairs through Tyler's Owner-occupied Rehabilitation Assistance Program. Since the house was beyond repair, a brand-new home was built just for them.

"The house was just infeasible for repair. There was major structural damage, roof damage, and electrical damage," says Brenda Johnson, Director of Neighborhood Services.

The Campbell's worked with the city to customize a house that would best fit their needs. After two months of construction, they finally have their own two bedroom home that sits right where the old one did.

"I thank God for working through them and if it hadn't been for the Lord, this never would have happened," adds Campbell.

Shirley Campbell says everyone is welcome in her new home and she looks forward to spending time in it.
