SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a 23-year-old man who led police on a highway chase, ended the pursuit at his home in Summerville where he was tackled by an officer.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office charged Jason Thomas Wingate of Summerville with driving under the influence and failure to stop for blue lights/siren for the early Tuesday morning chase.

A deputy who was on patrol on I-26 near the Ashley Phosphate exit noticed a car behind him that was speeding. When the deputy slowed down, got behind the car and turned on his lights, authorities say the suspect sped up to 90 mph and swerved across three lanes leading authorities on a high-speed chase.

The suspect then took the College Park exit where authorities say he kept a high-rate of speed and slowed down slightly as he passed through two neighborhoods. The incident report states that at one point, Wingate slammed on his brakes which cut off a patrol vehicle and caused damage to the cruiser.

According to investigators, the suspect then drove to a trailer park where he jumped out of the moving car and ran towards his house. The deputy said he jumped out of his car and tackled the suspect to the ground until backup arrived.

When deputies searched the car, they say they found several electronic items in their original packaging which the suspect said he stole from a Walmart. Authorities found a 32" Samsung television, an HP computer monitor, a Linksys wireless USB adapter and a Keyfolio Bluetooth keyboard case.

According to the report, Wingate began to talk about his life of crime as a thief stealing items for a pawn shop owner who sells the items on eBay.

A bottle of White Zinfandel wine was found in the car. The suspect told police he was drinking while he was driving on the interstate.

Bond was set at $10,000.
