East Texas hospital takes a big step to fight cancer

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – A radical new step in the fight against cancer has started in East Texas.

Today, Texas Oncology and Tyler's Mother Frances Hospital were chosen as one of only twelve places nationwide to participate in a massive, cancer-research project.

The two were chosen to join the International Genomics Consortium and the National Institutes of Health's Cancer  Genome Atlas Project.  The decision was based on their reputation as a regional treatment center.

Mother Frances will serve as a tissue source site.  Physicians will take cancer tissue from willing patients so that it can be studied.  the facility will also gather specific, long-term clinical data.

The research will be used to find flaws in cancer cells that can be targeted with treatment and will benefit people worldwide.
