Police: Children walked a mile for toilet paper while mom slept

ROCK HILL, NC (WBTV) - A North Carolina mom is facing charges of child neglect after her two young children walked nearly a mile from their home in search of toilet paper, a York County Sheriff's Office report states.

According to the report, deputies were called to the Kangaroo Express on the 600 block of Tinsley Way, in the city's Manchester area, on Sunday morning after a 5-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother were found at the gas station alone.

The children told deputies they'd walked to the store from their home on East Baskins Road, nearly a mile away, to buy toilet paper.

When deputies went to the home to find the children's mother, the report states, they found 27-year-old Candace Amber Cole sleeping in the home with the door of the home open. Cole told deputies that she wasn't aware that her children had left the home.

According to the report, the deputy went into the home and found it to be "extremely unclean [with] no sheets on the children's bed, animal feces all over the home." The deputy also reported finding multiple bags of trash, rotten food and a toilet clogged with feces in the home.

The deputy called the Department of Social Services to come to the home.  The children were taken by Cole's mother, who lives in Rock Hill.

Cole was arrested, charged with two counts child neglect and is being held on a $20,000 bond.
