Body found in burned car

FRANKLIN COUNTY,TX (KLTV)-Franklin County authorities are trying to unravel a mystery after a horribly burned human body was found in the trunk of a burned car in a remote area on Saturday morning. The discovery was made by a passing driver who spotted a car far off County Road 3170 in a remote wooded area of southern Franklin county.

"When officers arrived, they walked around the vehicle took a wide path noticed it was burned out, still warm but not burning, when they opened the truck they discovered a body in the truck of the vehicle," says Franklin County Sheriff Paul Fletcher.

The body was burned beyond recognition, they still don't know who it is. And more , investigators don't believe the victim died at the scene.

"we don't believe that the crime happened there, it burned the car completely but the rain apparently out it out," Fletcher says.

The car is so badly burned that there's no evidence for police and investigators to go on as to what happened. Even forensic specialists could not find whether accelerant's were used.

"Everything appears to be burned up that was of evidentiary use, its was a very hot fire it buckled the car roof it was a very thorough job, there was no identifiers on the body to tell whether it was male or female," Fletcher says.

One sure bet, authorities say, is that the victim did not lock themselves in the car and start the fire.

"Its a true mystery," he says.

The body has been sent to Dallas for autopsy. The Texas Rangers and the state fire marshal have joined Franklin County authorities in investigating the incident.
