Man pleads guilty in 2 ETX cold case murders

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An man pleads guilty to two East Texas cold case murders.

Thomas Earl Dunn pleaded guilty Friday morning to murdering Catheryn Powell and Francis Willingham in the early 1980's.

According to Smith County DA, Matt Bingham, both murders were brutal in nature.

Initially, Henry Lee Lucas had been charged in the murder of Catherine Powell, but the charge was later dropped due to lack of evidence.

According to the plea agreement, Dunn was sentenced to life in prison with no fines.

Smith County DA, Matt Bingham told us the credit for the time he has already served amounts to less than a year. Dunn has over nineteen years left to serve before he is eligible for parole.

Bingham also said that Dunn got the maximum sentence that he could receive for a crime committed in the 1980's.
