TISD may cut ties with Camp Tyler amid budget cuts

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A sixty year relationship between Tyler ISD and Camp Tyler is in jeopardy.

TISD Board President Ron Vickery says federal budget cuts are the reason why the district may have to choose a cheaper educational camp.

The school board will present other options during Thursday night's meeting for outdoor fifth grade education. No decision will be made. It's just up for public discussion.

For decades Camp Tyler has been the camp of choice, but that could soon change if the numbers don't add up.

"If you're going to spend more money you got to really make sure you're doing it for the right reasons and look at what other options are available," said Ron Vickery, TISD School Board President.

Vickery says he knows Camp Tyler has had a big impact on thousands of students.

"Both of my boys went through the camp and loved it, but with our current economic situation, with the budget cuts going on all around we're literally looking at every dollar," he said.

Since 2009, he says the district has been on a year to year contract with Camp Tyler. Vickery says this year, the foundation approached the district asking for a $25 increase per student.

"No, we're not, I'm not looking for anyone to back down. we're just looking for what's going to be the best value for the taxpayer dollars," said Vickery. "We have about 1,500 students every year attend an outdoor education course and while it's only $25 per student, those numbers do add up."

Past attendees of the camp say it's difficult to place a price on that experience.

"It's just one of those things that you really can't put a value on the experiences and kind of life lessons you get from a week like that away from the classroom," said Brad Bergfeld, who attended Camp Tyler.

The board's president says June would be the soonest a decision would come.
