Brown water fills East Texas sinks

KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Some East Texans say they are stuck with a bad choice: drinking brown, discolored water from the faucet, or having to buy their own water.

"Sometimes it clears up but then, you sit for a little while you can see that it's kind of brown," says Larry Williams.

"This is the first time I've seen Kilgore water this bad," says Frank Guyton.

Kilgore Water Superintendent, David Hackley says it's this time of year that can cause water to discolor.

Hackley says, "The increased usage tends to scour the pipes and have a water effect on our water mains."

The iron levels raise in the water since there's more action in the iron pipes.

"The scouring action will knock a lot of that material loose and we get complaints of yellowish water, red water, brown water, depending on the degree of iron in the water," Hackley says.

On a positive note, Hackley says the water is safe to drink, "We wouldn't be putting water in the system if it wasn't safe to drink, sometimes it just doesn't look very good."

The City of Kilgore plans on flushing out all the fire hydrants next week, which will immediately clear up the water.
