MARION COUNTY, TX (KSLA) - Charges have now been brought against the father-in-law of an East Texas man who was shot and killed on Sunday in what authorities are calling a "domestic dispute."
49-year-old Troy Long was arrested late Tuesday morning by deputies and charged with the murder of 24-year-old Donte Mitchell, who was struck by a shotgun blast to the neck late Sunday night at a home on County Rd. 3222 in Jefferson.
David McKnight with the Marion County Sheriff's Office tells KSLA News 12 they were on the phone with the mother of Mitchell's six-month-old son, who was saying her father had a gun and the two were fighting. They lost connection and when they got connection back 30 seconds later, she was hysterically screaming that he had shot him.
Investigators say they explored the possibility that shooting may have been in self-defense based on those events, all captured in a 911 recording, but they say new evidence now suggests otherwise.
Long is expected to go before a judge Wednesday morning for a bond hearing. The case is expected to be presented before a grand jury on May 27th.
