Next steps after successful jail bond vote

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – Smith County Commissioners say you can expect to see quick work done on jail construction.

Jeff Warr, Precinct 1 Commissioner, says now that voters have approved the $35 million jail renovation and construction bond, he expects the first phase of the project to be done in 18 months.

Warr says he is glad that voters saw that this will let the county stop paying other counties to house Smith County prisoners.

"It pays for the building and paying for the building. Instead of being a tenant, we become the landlord. That is basically what it amounts to," says Warr.

Only 5 percent of the registered voters cast a ballot in Saturday's election.
