NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches Police have arrested two Missouri people after an officer reported finding 42 pounds of marijuana in the gas tank of the vehicle in which they were traveling.

Maria Lucia Salinas, 19, and Sergio Salinas, 46, both of Burch Tree, Mo., are charged with a third-degree felony of possession of marijuana.

According to the police report, the officer stopped their vehicle at 7:02 a.m. Thursday on the 1700 block of Southwest Stallings Drive.

The officer found 42 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle's gas tank, according to the report.

Specifics of how the officer found the marijuana was not immediately available.

"In my experience, what they do is they put the drugs inside a separate tank and place that tank inside the gas tank, then fill the gas tank with gas," police spokesman Lt. Paul Peterson said. "They do it to cover the smell so the dog can't smell it, but those dogs have such good noses that they can smell it anyway."
