Witnesses in shock following horrific motorcycle crash

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - It was a horrifying sight for hundreds of East Texas drivers on Tuesday. A car and motorcycle collide, causing a fire that killed the driver of the motorcycle.

The collision happened at the blinking yellow arrow light at the intersection of S. Broadway and Independence, the light in front of the Broadway Square Mall.

Tyler Police say a 71-year-old woman was turning into the mall on a blinking yellow light, when she went into the path of that motorcycle.

Witnesses tell KLTV that's when the motorcycle caught fire, with the driver trapped underneath.

"I've never seen nothing like that before. Oh my god," says witness Laverne Walker.

Walker is in shock after watching a motorcycle burst into flames after a car turned into its path.

"The motorcycle was in the left, the right-hand lane going down Broadway, too. And, I guess, this lady didn't see him. She said she didn't. And, she was making a left hand turn into here and when she did, she hit him and he just went up into the air," recalled Walker.

Before first responders arrived, witness Kevin Scrimshire says he jumped out of his car to help the 23-year-old motorcyclist.

"Me and another guy pulled him out and we got blankets and stuff," said Scrimshire.

Police say the 71-year-old female driver, was trying to turn into the mall parking light on a flashing yellow arrow.

"The person did not yield the right of way to the motorcycle causing the motorcycle to go ahead and strike the vehicle," says Tyler Police Officer Don Martin.

Witnesses say the woman was visibly shaken; Ems and others tried to console her.

A devastated crowd gathered on the mall's lawn still in disbelief over what happened Tuesday morning

At this time, Police have not filed any charges for failure to yield right of way.

The name of the motorcyclist and driver have not been released.
