FRANKLIN COUNTY, TX (KLTV) – An East Texan is facing capital murder charges after deputies in Franklin County say he fired a shotgun at them.

Just after 6:00 pm Monday evening, 61-year-old Rue Merle Smith was involved in an argument with his wife when things turned ugly. He tied his wife up in the garage and held her hostage.

She later escaped to safety. Afterward, Smith barricaded himself in the home. When Smith came out, he fired his weapon. He was shot in the leg by a deputy and taken into custody.

Smith is in custody and is charged with attempted capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. His bond is set at 1.5 million dollars.

The location of his wife is currently unknown, but sources say she escaped without any major injuries.
