Man shot after standoff with deputies

FRANKLIN COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A man is now in custody after a domestic dispute turned into a standoff, then a shootout with Franklin County authorities.

Officials with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department say around 6:15, 61-year old Rue Merle Smith was having an argument with his wife, and he allegedly held her hostage in their home before she was able to escape and call authorities.

Once deputies arrived to the scene, they say Smith had barricaded himself inside, threatening to kill himself.

Investigators say officers set up a perimeter, when Smith ran outside the home with a shotgun, firing at least once, and forcing authorities to return fire.

Rue Merle Smith was reportedly hit in the knee and was taken into custody.

No one else was hurt in the shooting.
