Veteran's Court established in Smith County

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – Smith County has established the Veteran's Court to help retired personnel of the armed forces.

This program is designed to help veterans who commit misdemeanor or felony offenses within Smith County. Only honorable discharged veterans can qualify.

Judge Randall Rogers says that this is a better way to help veterans get back on their feet.

"They just get conviction after conviction after conviction and it ruins the rest of their life. They don't get well and they eat up resources. The theory is we fix the problem," says Rogers.

The Veteran's Court will be made up of representatives of the Smith County Council of Judges, The Veteran's Administration and the District Attorney's Office.

This group will determine if the convicted veteran is eligible for the program.
