Whitehouse seniors commit to walking in a soldier's shoes

WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) - It started as a mission to support our troops that turned into an inspiring movement.

A group of Whitehouse High School students will now be sporting Combat Boots. It's a part of a national boot campaign. It didn't take long for the school to complete their tribute to the cause.

Nearly 200 Whitehouse seniors have made a commitment to walk in a soldiers shoes. The journey to Friday's Boot Campaign ceremony, honoring our armed forces and veterans, started with a book called the Lone Survivor and Kate Mohr's curiosity.

"What would it be like for us to put on their shoes to kind of walk a mile in their shoes? Well, now we're putting on their boots and just experiencing what they experienced," said Mohr.

"We want them to realize you know what every time I look at these boots, there's someone that has fought so I can walk around freely," said Teresa Hughes, a teacher at Whitehouse.

Andy Burnett knows something about the price of freedom. He served as a platoon medic for the military. During his service he was injured. He's now paralyzed from the chest down.

"I definitely count it as an honor to get hurt the way I did," he said. "You know people talk about giving their life for their country, but they don't really think about you know what's given in between your life and a healthy body."

Burnett says he was amazed at the amount of students proudly putting on their boots.

"Now, when they wear their boots around, people are going to ask them you know why are you wearing your boots and they'll be able to tell them," said Burnett. "So, it just raises the awareness and a lot of good things can come out of that."

He challenges people to remember the men and women fighting for our freedom by walking in their shoes.
