East Texans reflect on Rev. David Wilkerson's life

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A powerful preacher is how Mark Brock described David Wilkerson. "He was a man of great conviction," he said. "Very much believed God's calling, not only on his life, but every person's life."

Brock is chief-financial-officer of Youth With a Mission, a Christian youth outreach ministry located outside Lindale. He took us inside the room that was once "Bro. Dave's" office.

Brock said Wilkerson owned the, more than 350 acres before selling the property to YWAM back in 1980 for a tenth of its value.

"You meet few people in your life--at least, I have--with that kind of generosity," said Brock.

Troopers said Wilkerson and his wife were traveling east on Highway 175, near the Anderson/Cherokee County line.

Their car drifted into the path of an on-coming big rig, and hit the truck head-on. Gwendolyn Wilkerson was rushed to the hospital. Her husband died on scene.

"He is, now, where we all hope to go," said Dallas Holm, a Christian recording artist who spent more than 10 years traveling with Wilkerson across the world.

"His hobby was studying God's word, praying, preparing." Holm said Wilkerson had a single focus on what he felt was God's calling on his life.

That focus raised some eyebrows, in 2009, when Wilkerson claimed, "an earth-shattering calamity is about to happen...so frightening, we're all going to tremble."

Some scoffed at the message. Others saluted it in the days that followed.

Rev. David Wilkerson was 79-years-old.
