Van softball helps teammate in need

VAN, TX (KLTV) -   Blue skies in Van.  A perfect time for practice.  The Van softball field is empty.  About six miles south, the district champions aren't fielding grounders.  They're picking up tree limbs.

"It means a lot to me that they're coming out here to help us," said Van freshman Nicole Gandy.

Gandy is a member of the Van softball team.  She spotted the tornado headed towards her home Tuesday night.

"It was really scary," said Gandy.  "I said it's (the tornado) down and my dad got in the closet. He was using all his might to keep the door shut. There was a lot of glass breaking and you could hear it breaking things."

The Gandy family came out safe.  The damage was extensive.

"We have trees down and our game room roof is on top of our house," said Gandy.

"We were all texting each other making sure everybody was okay," said Van softball player Jasmin Gipson said.  "Once we heard Nicole's house was damaged we wanted to help as soon as possible."

Coach Jeff Roberts had no problem with calling off practice.

"She's (Nicole Gandy) one of our pitchers and starting first baseman," said Roberts.  "But that means little in the grand scheme of things. We had to come out here and help this family devastated by this tornado.  It's just big for them to bond as a family and really come together as a team. That's the most important thing in all of this."
