East Texas woman survives destruction of her home

BEN WHEELER, TX (KLTV) – Thelma Barker, 76, was in her home in Ben Wheeler on Tuesday night when strong winds sent her home tumbling. She is listed in fair condition at a Tyler hospital.

Barker was in her home with her dog when the storms hit. She grabbed her dog and took cover in her bathroom.

The powerful winds from the storm ripped the home from its foundation. The top half of the structure flew across the street while she was still inside. Some of her neighbors are amazed she survived.

Daniel Lee, Barker's son-in-law says, "She's got lots of lacerations from tin and glass and I think one of her ankles is broken. She's got a broken bone in one of her ankles and her spine is fractured in three places."

Lee says a neighbor pulled her from under the debris. On Wednesday, family and friends rummaged through the mess to save what they could.

Since Barker spent her entire life working as a seamstress, the first thing family searched for was her sewing kit. They also found a quilt that she was working on.

"I'm just surprised she made it through this. She's a tough lady," says Kenny McManus, friend.
