63-year-old church opens one year after being burned

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – The First Church of Christ Scientist, a Tyler church that was burned just over a year ago, has been rebuilt and opened. Friday, the public was invited to the church on East Second Street in Tyler to tour the new building.

It took a solid year to restore what was destroyed by arsonists. Flames gutted the inside of the First Church of Christ Scientist, although some parts of the outside of this 1948 church survived the fire.

"This entrance here is still existing and the four columns," said Shaun Shults of Estes Estimates.

What was destroyed had to be replicated, such as a copula and some of the sanctuary windows. What makes the sanctuary feel like home again is in the details, from the window squares to the completely refurbished 100-year-old organ.

"I had not really noticed this all before and watching it go up. And oh my gosh, it is just really lovely. Very, very beautiful," says Liz Smith, church member.

A grand opening service will be held on Easter Sunday at 11 p.m.
