The Easter gift that keeps on living

By Jamey Boyum

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – You may think they're adorable, but buying a rabbit as an Easter gift for the kids is not a smart idea unless the whole family is ready for a commitment.

Rabbits can live up to 10 years and require a lot of care.

Petland of Tyler says that purchasing a rabbit should be a family decision. Rabbits can be trained to use a litter box, but you must rabbit-proof your home before you let it loose to explore. They will chew up baseboards, cords and anything that they shouldn't chew on. A cage is a must-buy.

Rabbits are reasonably easy to care for and can make great pets for children five and up. The family must remember, however, that they are not just a pet for Easter Sunday. Texas heat is far too hot for them, and they must be kept indoors.

Petland and The Humane Society both recommend that if you are wanting to give a rabbit as an Easter gift but aren't ready for a long-term commitment, you might want to buy a stuffed toy bunny instead. They urge that baby ducks and chicks do not make good Easter Gifts either.
