SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Bond has been set for a Midlands father suspected of abusing a four-month-old baby boy who is in critical condition with a skull fracture.

Lee Dean Azevedo, 34, of Sumter, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis. A judge set Azevedo's bond at $150,000 at a hearing on Thursday.

Sumter County Lieutenant Joe Lane said the infant was severely injured inside the family's home on South Lake Cherryvale Road. "On a scale of 1-10, it's a 9 or 10," said Lane, referring to the baby's injuries. "It's pretty bad."

"[Azevedo] loves this child," said Azevedo's attorney, Ken Young. Young told a judge the child was injured when he fell.

A social worker at Palmetto Richland Hospital called the sheriff's office on Tuesday concerned about the infant who was transported there from Tuomey Regional Medical Center for treatment, according to Dennis.

According to a sheriff's department incident report, the infant has injuries that include a fractured skull and swelling and bleeding on the brain. Investigators said the baby was in the care and custody of Azevedo when the injuries occurred.

Lane, a father himself, says what the suspect is accused of doing is disturbing. "I think what upsets me the most is that it's a father and child and that a father could do that to his own child," said Lane.

The child is in critical, but stable condition at the hospital, according to the sheriff. "I'm a parent," said Lane. "We just have to take our time and relax. Just back away and relax a little bit and take a couple of breaths. It's just a very sad situation."

Investigators said Azevedo's other child, a 3-year-old daughter, is in the custody of relatives.
