East Texan celebrates 102 years in style

By Jamey Boyum

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Wilbur Bugg had a very special day, and it's not just because he turned 102 on Tuesday. Wilbur and a few select members of his family were flown to Tyler in a World War II airplane for lunch.

The first half of his life, Wilbur Bugg was a farmer and a rancher. When World War II hit, he was asked to stay on his farm instead of going into combat. Someone had to help keep the people from starving. His flight in a DC-3, which was in service in World War II was a long time coming.

Scott Glover was the pilot of his special birthday flight, but it was not the first time Wilbur had flown with him. On Memorial Day, when Wilbur was only 98, Scott let him cut in line so that he could have his first ride. He flip-flopped and did barrel rolls. Although there were no aerobatic maneuvers in the DC-3 for his birthday flight, it was very special to have his son, grandson, and great-granddaughter along for the ride.

Wilbur says he worked hard, ate right, exercised and had a good attitude about life. That is his secret to his great health and long life. The party isn't over quite yet. He went back to Mount Pleasant for another party at the assisted living complex where he lives.
