More charges expected in Henderson grocery shooting

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV) – More charges could soon be filed in a grocery store parking lot shooting.

Henderson Police say a man was shot while he and his wife were in the Kroger parking lot around 6:30 Monday night.

That man is still hospitalized, and the alleged gunman, 19-year-old Victor Luna, is in jail charged with attempted murder.

Khuynh Le was at work when he heard gunshots ring out from the parking lot next door. He'd never heard anything like it before.

Police say the victim, 35-year-old Evert Almazan, and his wife had just left the store; they were loading groceries into the car when Luna drove up.

"At some point in time, they did exchange words somewhere on the parking lot… We don't know if it was heated or if it was an argument or anything," says Lt. Craig Sweeney of the Henderson Police Department.

Sweeney says the suspect and the victim do know each other. The extent of that relationship is still under investigation, along with the possible motive.

Witnesses in the parking lot gave police the information they needed to track the suspect to his Rusk County Home. Later that evening, Luna reportedly admitted he was the gunman and was arrested.

A 9MM pistol was also taken during the arrest.

Police say the victim was shot at least two or three times.

The victim was flown to a Tyler hospital, where he is in ICU in critical condition.

Almazan's wife was not injured in the shooting.

Police say on top of the attempted murder charge, Luna could face reckless endangerment because other people were in the parking lot.
