New cabs promote mobility for wheelchair-bound East Texans

By Jamey Boyum

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - If you or a loved one is wheelchair-bound we have some good news for you. Increased mobility is on its way to Tyler and the surrounding area. The Taxi Cab Company of Tyler is purchasing several SUV's that feature some of the easiest wheelchair access we've ever seen.

If you're in a wheelchair, you know how tough it is to get around if you're trying to do some errands, or just go to work. Well, a Tyler Cab company realized this and is trying to do something to help. Jamal Moharer is buying a dozen Vehicle Production Group Autos, a new car company that purposely builds the MV-1 for easy handicap access.

He said, "The beauty of this product is it is US made, meets all the standards of Buy America Act, and it's green, it operates on compressed natural gas. We'd like to take the lead and be the first city in Texas to have a fleet that is 100% compatible and accessible, and meets the Americans with Disabilities Act standards."

Fares will be competitive with other cab companies, which is great news for folks like James Collins.

"If a cab had a car similar to this I would be more willing to come into the cab because it's a quick hook up, quick fix and then you're gone. No need to lift my wheelchair into a trunk or throw it over the back of a truck or fold it up, take the wheels off, I just roll up and I'm here, ready to go. We need more vehicles with a purpose, and this is a vehicle with a purpose." says Collins.

And, according to the company, 98% manufactured in America.

VPG begins production in June, and the vehicles should be in Tyler a couple weeks later. The MV-1 is available for consumer pre-orders. They plan on selling them at a dealership locally, but they're not affiliated with anyone at this time.
