School Official: Someone fired shot at school bus

Released by Peter J. Running, Superintendent, Kemp ISD on April 13, 2011:

Dear Parents and Community members:

This morning at approximately 6:40 am, during our normal student pick up and bus operations, an incident occurred while three students were on a bus.

Without warning, a window of the bus was broken and we had no apparent reason as to why it broke. Glass from the broken window did spray inside the bus. All of the students were checked out by District medical personnel and there were no injuries to any of the students.

When the bus driver immediately reported the incident, it was indicated that a bang was heard and the window was broken. Upon further investigation, it was thought there was a possible gun shot.

After a full day of investigation, it was confirmed by an eye witness that it was a gun shot that broke the window. A .22 caliber rifle was recovered and is believed to have been used in this incident.

District police have made arrests and will be completing the investigation and the necessary reports.

We are very thankful there were no injuries and please be assured that the District will continue to do whatever is necessary to provide a safe environment for all students at all school related functions and activities.

I am very proud of the bus driver and of our transportation department with the efficient manner the students were taken care of and how the incident was reported. I am proud of District law enforcement for the timely and efficient investigation and apprehension of the suspect and locating the weapon.

At this time the District is not able to release any names or any more details as the investigation is still on going.

We thank you again for entrusting us with your children and the District continues with its commitment for the safety of every student.

Sincerely,

Peter J. Running, Ed.D
