Survivor of miraculous plane crash tells his story

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - He witnessed the incredible "Miracle on the Hudson" first-hand, and he was in Tyler on Wednesday sharing his amazing story.

Dave Sanderson was the last passenger off US Airways Flight 1549 moments after it landed in the middle of New York's Hudson River.

January 15, 2009, US Airway flight 1549 takes off from New York LaGuardia, bound for Charlotte, NC, home for Dave.

Sanderson says he gave up a first class seat on a later flight and boarded the plane.

Within minutes, he remembers hearing an explosion as the engines went out.

Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the hero in the cockpit, would soon come over the intercom, and tell more than 150 passengers and crew onboard to "brace for impact."

The Airbus A-320 hit the water hard and remarkably stayed intact.

Passengers rushed to escape the sinking fuselage.

Dave let the other passengers go by first, and even helped some onto the wing of the plane.

There was no room for him, so he waited inside waist deep in nearly freezing cold water until help finally came.

Dave spent the night in the hospital with a case of hypothermia, and new set of sweats from the American Red Cross.

He shared his story with a group of volunteers in Tyler on Wednesday, as a sort of thank you and show of support.

‘Brace for Impact' is the book he wrote with other passengers and first responders.

A portion of the proceeds from Sanderson's book go directly to help the Red Cross and its programs
