Woman shot dead after stopping for directions

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A 20-year-old woman fatally shot in a botched robbery attempt. The shooting happened a little before 10:30PM at East 37th and Croton.

Police tell 19 Action News Asia B. Harris and her 21-year-old husband were in the area looking for a relative's home when they became lost. They stopped to get directions from a stranger, when the stranger offered to ride with the couple to show them how to get to their destination.

The unknown man then got into the backseat of their vehicle, and brandished a handgun in an attempt to rob them.  The victim's husband jumped out of the car to run and get help.  The husband alleges he then heard gunshots as he ran away.

Upon arrival, the officers located Harris with a gunshot wound to the head lying on the ground next to her vehicle.

This investigation is being handled by the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit. The official cause of death will be determined by the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office.
