Student in custody for weapon on REL campus

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Around 12:15 Thursday afternoon, TISD police received an anonymous tip that a student was in possession of a weapon on the Robert E. Lee campus in Tyler.

Immediately, administrators located the student and confirmed the student was carrying a rusty, disassembled handgun with no ammunition.

The student was immediately taken into custody, and is in the custody of the Smith County Juvenile Attention Center, charged with possession of a firearm at school.

Principal Roger McAdoo says, "Although we hope we never have these types of instances, this is a great example of how reporting a concern can help keep each other safe.  We applaud the efforts of our anonymous caller in communicating this information to school officials."

"The only information that I've been given is that it was an anonymous tip. So I'm not sure who it's from. We're just appreciative that they took the time, and were concerned enough to call. Cause this is what's important, and this is what helps us do our job more efficiently," says TISD spokesperson Angela Jenkins.

The students continued the day on their normal schedule.

Principal McAdoo notified parents via an automated phone recording.
